Listening to podcasts…What topics interest us the most?…

Over the years, as we’ve traveled the world, our days haven’t always been filled with constant motion and activity. There have been countless hours spent in airports, on long-haul flights, in quiet holiday rentals, or like today, seated comfortably on the veranda, watching the wildlife wander in and out of view. It’s on days like this, when the weather is perfect and there’s nowhere we need to be, that we realize how much we both crave mental stimulation.

We aren’t very good at simply sitting in silence for long periods. As much as we appreciate the peaceful surroundings, our minds tend to wander toward learning, questioning, and exploring new ideas. That’s where podcasts have found a permanent place in our lives.

Neither of us is interested in fiction podcasts or storytelling for entertainment alone. While we understand the appeal for many, we are far more drawn to content that teaches us something or challenges our thinking. We like to come away from listening with a fresh perspective or a deeper understanding of a topic we may not have considered before.

Interestingly, we don’t spend much time listening to podcasts about travel. That may seem odd considering our lifestyle, but for us, it often feels redundant. We are already immersed in travel every single day. Unless it’s something specific to a destination we’re about to visit, we prefer to step outside that familiar space and explore entirely different subjects.

Tom’s interests are wide-ranging and often lean toward world affairs, politics, science, industry, and history. He enjoys understanding how things work, how decisions are made, and how events unfold on a global scale. And of course, there’s his long-time favorite, Garage Logic from Minnesota, which keeps him connected to a place that still feels like home in many ways.

As for me, my listening habits tend to drift in a slightly different direction. I’m drawn to topics related to health and wellness, especially keto and the one-meal-a-day way of eating that has been such a big part of our lives for years. I also enjoy science, space exploration, astrology, paleontology, and technology. There’s something fascinating about learning how the body works, how the universe functions, and how innovation continues to shape our future.

Even so, I often find myself listening to Garage Logic alongside Tom. It’s become a shared experience for us, something we both look forward to during the week. There’s a comfort in that routine, a sense of familiarity no matter where we happen to be in the world.

When I’m in the kitchen, chopping vegetables or preparing a meal, I almost always have my earbuds in. It turns what could feel like a routine task into an opportunity to learn something new. Before I know it, dinner is ready, and I’ve gained a new insight or heard an idea that lingers in my mind long after the podcast ends.

We’ve come to realize that, as Type-A personalities, quiet contemplation doesn’t come naturally to us. While we certainly appreciate moments of stillness, we are constantly seeking ways to engage our minds. Podcasts have become the perfect solution. They allow us to relax physically while remaining mentally active.

In many ways, they’ve expanded our world just as much as travel itself. Through the voices of others, we’re exposed to ideas, discoveries, and perspectives we might never encounter otherwise. And in a lifestyle like ours, where every day can feel both familiar and new at the same time, that ongoing sense of learning keeps things fresh, interesting, and deeply fulfilling.

In addition, our listening habits often lead us down paths we might never have explored on our own. One of us will hear something intriguing and immediately share it with the other, sparking lively discussions that carry on throughout the day. These exchanges have become part of our routine, adding depth to even the simplest moments. Whether it’s a new scientific discovery, a different perspective on world events, or an insight into health and wellness, we enjoy dissecting it together. In this way, podcasts don’t just inform us individually; they enrich our connection and keep our conversations meaningful and ever-evolving.

Be well.
