Ugh!…This is awful…

We lived on an alpaca farm in NZ when this situation occurred in the paddock in the backyard. Luckily, it turned out OK for the alpacas. We laughed over this once we realized they were both doing well after figuring out how to untangle themselves. For more on this story, please click here.

This is day five with no working toilet. Last evening at 6:00 pm, a maintenance guy came to fix it, but was unable to do so. This morning, he’s scheduled to return with a heavy-duty piece of equipment that hopefully will resolve this issue. There is nothing we’ve done to cause this.

When we first arrived eight days ago, we noticed that the toilet paper wouldn’t flush. Over the next few days, the situation worsened, and the toilet quit flushing sufficiently for anything to go down. You know what I mean. I will not describe what we’ve had to do during this dreadful situation.

Additionally, the hot water doesn’t work correctly, and we rarely have hot water. No, it’s not as simple as turning on the faucet in the proper direction to produce hot water. It’s a confusing and convoluted hot water heating system in a closet in the bathroom that isn’t working correctly.

Then, as mentioned, the dryer doesn’t work. There is a clothes drying rack which we’re using to hang clothes, but when we do the sheets again, there is nowhere to hang them to dry in time to put them back on the bed. We’ll have to wash one sheet on one day, drape it over the rack, and then do the second sheet once the first one dries, using only one sheet at a time during these periods.

What does all this remind me of?… Lockdown in India in a hotel room for ten months, with no laundry service and having to wash our clothes in the shower. Ugh. However, I must admit, this is much worse. Not having a working toilet is unbearable.

Last night, we reported this situation to Capital One Travel. If the toilet issue isn’t resolved today, we are calling them back to help get our money back, including the $1500 deposit we paid when we arrived, which wasn’t disclosed as required at the time of booking, nor were the three flights of stairs to get to the apartment. There was a notation that there were a “few steps” to the front door of the unit.

If this doesn’t get resolved, we’ll have no choice but to move to a hotel at a significantly higher cost, hoping to recoup our US $ 6,500.

In the meantime, we have no interest in exploring the area or dining out. Our entire focus is on getting things fixed here. Little things, such as the absence of kitchen towels, an extra set of sheets, cleaning supplies, a toilet paper holder, or bathroom towel racks, contribute to the inconvenience of this apartment. Gosh, we had it made in the bush in South Africa!

We haven’t experienced such issues since the first house we rented in Belize in 2013, our first holiday rental, which we left after a week due to a lack of water and an infestation of sand fleas, resulting in a loss of the money we paid. Without a rental car (rentals were US $3500 a month at that time), with horrible WiFi to use to find something else. We ended up renting a golf cart and driving to resorts to find something else.

In Belize, we lucked out and found the fabulous Laru Beya, where we were able to negotiate a 50% discount for the two-month stay in a beautiful oceanfront condo. It all turned out well in the end, when we loved the location, the people we met, and the easy walking distance to restaurants. But now? Ugh!

Additionally, the fact that Tom can’t hear a thing only exacerbates the issues. Need I say, he is frustrated and grumpy?

As of this writing, the maintenance guy is late by 90 minutes.

That’s all of my whining for yet another day. Hopefully, we’ll be back tomorrow with good news.

We ventured out on a walk….A new challenge…

We walked along one street and will try others next time. Since I can only walk so far, next time we go out, we’ll try another street.

Yesterday afternoon, we decided to “give it a try” and head down those 30 steps for a walk in the neighborhood. I went down as gingerly as possible with Tom in front of me in case I fell. Once on the street, we both sighed a breath of fresh air and began a short 15-minute walk, taking photos along the way. My legs held up well.

Every few days, we’ll head out again for more walks over the next 37 days until we board the ship. Once on the ship, walking will be easier for me due to the level surfaces. Additionally, I plan to utilize the fitness center on the ship to work out on the treadmill, elliptical, and lift weights several times a week.

As far as the new challenge is concerned, we’re facing the fact that Tom’s hearing aids have stopped working. It appears to be due to a problem with the lithium battery charger. This afternoon, we’ll call Costco, where he purchased them in 2024 in Minnesota, and see if they can provide a replacement charger or offer an alternative solution.

Tom likes lasagne inspiring us to visit this restaurant in the future.

Most likely, they won’t send it to us in Spain, but they will send it to our mailing service in Nevada. Once it arrives there, we’ll have them ship it to us overnight, incurring some substantial shipping charges. There’s no way Tom can go without them until we return to the US in May.

Not only can he not hear me talk to him, but he won’t be able to engage in conversation with other passengers on the ship, seriously impacting the quality of our experience. Hopefully, the three-year warranty Costco provided will include the replacement of this part. If not, we’ll have no choice but to purchase another charger for US $199, plus the cost of overnight shipping.

The longer he’s worn the hearing aids, the worse his hearing seems to be without them. This has become an issue when I try to talk to him when he takes them out to go to bed. I have to holler for him to hear anything I am saying.

Fortunately, we have two Bluetooth portable speakers that enable him to hear his favorite podcasts and any shows we may stream in the evening.

Otherwise, all is fine. Once we returned to the apartment after the walk, I had less trouble going up the stairs than going down.

Today, we have four small roasted chicken breasts left, with potatoes for Tom and a new batch of coleslaw I made this morning for both of us. We have decided not to drink alcoholic beverages while here, unless we dine out, and neither of us has missed our usual sundowners/happy hour.

There was a lot of graffiti on the walls of this former petrol station.

Once we’re on the ship, with our priority status, we’ll enjoy the few included “five-a-day” free drinks per person. Neither of us would ever drink five drinks in a day, but it’s a good perk.

A new and exciting booking!…

This is the view from the kitchen in the holiday home we booked this morning on New Zealand’s North Island.

When the owner of the New Zealand alpaca farm suggested we contact her in September to inquire about the property’s availability, she explained that she had received two offers for sale, in the past few days. We knew we’d have to scramble to find a property during the holiday season. Over the past two days, as we continued to settle in here in Barcelona, we began our search.

We’d stayed at the alpaca farm for three months in 2016 and had hoped to rent it again. When Trish explained that the property wouldn’t be available, we were on a mission to find a house in New Zealand for our upcoming stay, from December 13, 2025, when we disembark from the 47-night cruise, to February 12, 2026.

The North Island of New Zealand. Many prefer the South Island, but after visiting both, we are content to stay on the North Island, which has its own unique charm.

From there, we’ll head to Tasmania to Tom’s favorite place in the world, to the quaint town of Penguin, located on the Bass Strait between the Australian mainland and Tasmania.

We knew single-family houses in New Zealand were expensive, especially during the holiday season. As a result, we spent hours scouring properties on multiple websites, primarily focusing on VRBO, our preferred source.

After considerable time and effort, knowing we had less than three months until we needed to book something, we stumbled across the above newly renovated house, as shown in the photo. We couldn’t be more thrilled to have firmed up the booking this morning.

When we arrive at the property in the town of Kaiwaka, we’ll share more photos and details about the property. The house is a 90-minute drive from Auckland Airport, which is a convenient and scenic route that we’ll certainly enjoy. It’s 34 minutes to the closest supermarket, but we’ll plan to shop every other week.

We love staying in remote areas and realize that we have to drive further to restaurants and shopping. It’s a small sacrifice for the opportunity to live in quaint and charming locations around the world.

After reviewing the map for Kaiwaka, we found plenty of nearby restaurants and pubs. Of course, no pub in the world is as fun as Jabula. But, while we are away from Marloth Park, we’ll savor every experience and location we visit in the upcoming nine months to come, until we return to the bush.

Of those nine months, we’ll be spending 72 nights on cruises. We’ll be boarding on October 27 for the first 47 nights, and then on April 14, 2026, we’ll board another 25-night cruise. What an exciting thought!

Our travel enthusiasm has been restored after a few days of frustration since we left last Sunday. Now settled in and accepting my limitations, we’re making the best of our time in Sant Marti, Barcelona, for the next 38 days.

We made it to Spain…with some glitches…

I don’t know where to begin. The 25-hour trip from Nelspruit, South Africa, to Barcelona, Spain, was fraught with some issues, most of which we couldn’t control, but all of which turned out fine in the end. Travel isn’t always seamless and easy, nor is the lifestyle we’ve chosen for ourselves over the past almost 13 years.

Then again, we often hear about major house repairs, storm damage, and frustrating home ownership challenges that we never face “living in the world with the utmost of freedom,” but not always the utmost of convenience.

Right now, Tuesday at 8:30 am, I am situated on a comfy sofa in the living room/lounge room of our apartment in Sant Marti, Spain. Now I understand even more why we prefer to rent single-family houses over apartments. This style of living isn’t compatible with our preferences. As you read along today, you’ll see what we mean.

As for the trip, I won’t bore you with the endless details. The major distraction was the massive storm that hit Nelspruit shortly before takeoff from the small airport in Mpumalanga, the first such storm we’d seen in South Africa since arriving last March. Our flight was delayed for over an hour, but fortunately, we waited at the gate, rather than on the tarmac, as is often the case for many travelers.

By the time we were ready to board, we had to walk in the dark, right into the remnants of the storm, and up the tiny staircase to the Airlink plane. It was the first time since we began visiting South Africa in 2013 that we had ever flown out of Nelspruit (MQP) in the dark of night, albeit in a storm.

Much to our surprise, the flight was only a little turbulent, and we touched down in Johannesburg with 45 minutes remaining until our connecting flight on Qatar Airways. We had yet to go through security and immigration. By the kin of our teeth, we made the connecting flight.

All the while, we were texting back and forth with Gehard, who kept checking for our possible options in case we missed the connecting flights. In all of our years of world travel, we’d never missed a flight. Gerhard, after years of working for Alaska Airlines, we couldn’t have added a better ally to support us through the process. Thanks, Gergard! Yes, we are savvy enough to have done this ourselves, but it was comforting to have our dear friend helping us, since he, too, was familiar with the route, having visited Marloth Park for years.

The three flights were fine overall. We both managed to nod off a little during the two longer flights, feeling tired but relatively fine until bedtime last night, after we had a chance to do some unpacking.

However, the biggest issue of all was gaining access to this apartment using a keyless Bluetooth entry system. It wasn’t due to our having problems figuring out how to open the two doors with the app. It was nearly impossible to determine which door was the actual access to the apartment, given the misleading and ambiguous numbers outside the property. There were doors everywhere.

After a 30-minute phone call to Capital One Travel to obtain the property manager’s phone number, the call was frustrating because it wouldn’t go through on my phone, despite my efforts. A kindly young college student,  Carlos made the call for us and spoke to the woman from the management company in Spanish. She spoke some English but ended up yelling at Carlos and  at me.

After over an hour, we finally managed to get the correct doors open and walked into a huge surprise. There were 30 (Tom counted) slippery ceramic tile steps to get to the apartment. Initially, the listing explained it was only a few steps. Had we known this, we would never have rented this place. It is hazardous for me to go up and down the stairs.

Tom and I agreed, much to our frustration, that we won’t be going out that much while here, when it is so difficult for me to manage the uneven steps.

The kindly young man, Carlos, helped Tom bring up all of our heavy bags to the apartment while I hung onto the railing, attempting to make my way up. We offered him a generous tip for all his assistance, and when he refused, we insisted that he take it. Carlos is going to return and help us when it’s time to bring the bags down once again on October 27, the day we board the ship. We exchanged WhatsApp numbers, and this morning, I saw a message from him with a list of all the best restaurants in the area.

As for the apartment, here are the issues;

  • No hot water (reported to management) in the shower and sinks
  • The drain plug in the bathroom sink won’t open, and therefore, we can’t use it. (also reported this today)
  • The bed pillows are as hard as rocks. (The bed and duvet are comfortable).
  • The kitchen is poorly supplied
  • The stovetop is convection and confusing to turn on. It’s a European-style we’d only used once in the past in Dubai. We sent Gerhard a photo, and he sent us directions.
  • No air conditioning in the bedroom (only in the living/lounge room)
  • In order for Tom to get to his side of the bed, he has to crawl over the bed since a desk, attached to the wall, blocks the way, in order to allow the closet door to be opened. Both bedrooms are very cramped, more than we’ve seen in the past.
  • The bathroom is tiny with no towel bars or a toilet paper holder.

Otherwise, the apartment is fine, modern, clean, and well-maintained with a minimalist decor.

So it goes. We will be here for another 41 days. In any case, we’ll strive to make the best of it. This morning, I placed a grocery order that is scheduled to arrive tomorrow morning. We’ve decided to order takeaway as much as possible, only cooking two to three evenings a week.

Off we go to Spain…Yesterday’s stressful holiday rental situation…

inge, Gerhard, Rita and Tom and I last night at Jabula.

We’ll be leaving Marloth Park this afternoon to head to the MQP (Nelspruit/Mpumalanga/Kruger Airport), which is about a 75-minute drive on the N4 Highway through the winding roads and the gorge, the part of the drive that is most intimidating. With construction on the highway, we must leave an hour earlier than expected to ensure we arrive at the airport on time.

Once we arrive and check our bags, we’ll feel more at ease, even if we have to wait a few hours for the short flight to Johannesburg, where we’ll have a two-hour layover, before continuing on to Doha, Qatar. Hopefully, we’ll have enough time in Joburg to have dinner in one of the many restaurants in the airport.

We decided to eat before boarding, as the food on the plane will likely be Middle Eastern-type dishes, none of which I will eat due to their high starch content, and all of which Tom doesn’t like. It’s easier to dine in a restaurant at the airport and be done with it.

So, here’s what transpired yesterday with our holiday rental in Sant Marti, Spain, that left us exhausted and frustrated, even after we returned from dinner at Jabula with Rita, Inge, and Gerhard.

We booked the holiday home in Spain from Capital One Travel, where we have several credit cards with accumulated rewards points. One of the cards, Venture X, has an annual US $300 perk, which we combined with some reward points, but certainly not enough to cover the entire cost of US $5100 for the six-week stay.

We booked the holiday home in Sant Marti, in a popular, trendy warehouse district, with the credit card travel service handling everything, which seemed fine at the time. We were advised that 72 hours prior to your arrival, we’d receive instructions from the owner/property management company as to how to gain access to the property. Seventy-two hours came and went.

Yesterday afternoon, we called Capital One Travel, and after two hours of long-distance phone calls, we still didn’t have a contact person, phone number, or email address for the vendor. While sitting at the bar at Jabula, we finally received a call back from Capital One, with a lengthy email address, stating we needed to contact the vendor directly and follow their instructions.

Now, keeping in mind we’d already paid the US $5100, we expected to receive a door code to allow us to enter the property. Oh, no, it wasn’t that easy! The process that followed, which we did after returning home from dinner, was comparable to filling out a passport application.

We had to scan our passports to a specific format and size, take selfie photos using my laptop, and enter myriad morsels of information about ourselves, including providing a credit card so they could charge us a Euro $1500, US $1760, security deposit, plus a Euro 18, US $21, service fee (non-refundable). None of this information was disclosed when we rented the property.

We had no choice, or, as the credit card company explained, if we didn’t comply with the process instituted by Barcelona and the property manager, we would lose our $ 5100. They had us over a barrel.

I didn’t finish the application process until after 10:00 pm. Exhausted and frustrated, I tried to get some sleep but awoke at 4:30 am and have been awake since. It’s a sorry state to start the upcoming 23 hours of travel. But, somehow, we’ll get through it.

We only have the duffel bag left to close after adding the toiletries and the clothes Tom is wearing. Then, we’ll be all set. Hopefully, everything will go well when we arrive at the property tomorrow afternoon. We still don’t have an access code. I will be watching my email frequently.

As for a post for tomorrow, we shall see. Perhaps I will be up to doing a new post during our three-plus-hour layover in Doha.

Finally, we took the time to research flights from South Africa to Spain, which were scheduled to depart in 52 days. It’s incredible how quickly our total six months in Marloth Park are soon coming to an end. Surely, in the future, we’ll return, but for now, we have other plans on the horizon.

Beauty is all around us…Past and present photos…Big and “small things”…

A few roses remain in Trish and Neil’s garden as summer comes to an end.

As we continued on our travels throughout the world we found one commonality is each location…beauty is all around us. We need only stop long enough to spot it.

The idiom, “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” holds true. We each have our own unique perception of what we discover as beauty. For us, in our constant search for “the interesting” with the intent of sharing it with our worldwide readers, we find that which may be of interest, to possess a beauty of its own design.

Whether it’s an interesting insect, a blooming flower, an animal’s face, or form in the wild we often take a photo in nature we find most appealing. No doubt, many of our readers have no interest in many of the subjects of our photos or for that matter, what we’ve found to be beautiful. 

Here on the grounds, we noticed these flowers we’d also seen at the Pukeiti Gardens at Mount Taranaki.

Many are more interested in photos of familiar points of interest they’ve already seen in photos, online or in their own travels:  a historic building, a popular tourist attraction, a public venue, or familiar work of art. 

Were one to go back through our 1,313 previous posts, many such photos are contained therein.  From our photos in past posts, as shown below in the photo of Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain in May 2013 to the Venus de Milo statue at Le Louvre in the August 2014, we’ve seen so much.

Venus de Milo by Alexandros of Antioch, also known as Aphrodite of Milos. It was amazing there was a momentary break in the number of onlookers when 100’s had been crowded around this famous statue also trying to take photos.

Over the next two to six months we’ll be visiting and/or staying in such countries as Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, and Bali when we’ll be taking photos of familiar and significant works of art, historical buildings, and endless points of interest and beauty that may appeal to a wide faction of our readers who prefer to see more than nature shots.

For us, there’s a tremendous amount of enthusiasm as we anticipate these exciting countries we’ll soon visit.  The prospect of taking and sharing photos along the way, only adds to the excitement.

Sure, we spend a tremendous amount of time in quiet, remote locations constantly on the lookout for even “the small things” we’ve found unique and perhaps interesting to many of our readers as shown in this post and photo below.

This was our first photo of the dung beetle in action. The female often sits atop the ball of dung while the male moves it along using his back legs while his front legs grasp the ground for stability. The female lays eggs in the ball so she tags along as he rolls the ball, as they search for an adequate hole in which to bury the ball. The ball is used as sustenance for both of them as well as for the maturing larvae.

Whether it’s a small thing, a historic location, or an environment such as here on the alpaca farm in New Zealand, we expanded our personal horizons, perceptions, and expectations of that which is truly beautiful as we wrap our arms and minds around that which is located in our close proximity at any given moment.

We’ve never known the name of this dark-colored bloom although we’ve seen them in a number of countries. Any comments?

It is through this window we peer out at the world often from the lens of our camera to capture the beauty we find in our path. This, dear readers, is what brings us this infinite sense of joy and belonging.

Tomorrow on our 21st wedding anniversary (based on the date in this part of the world) we’ll be back with more on a unique, although “small” point of interest we discovered last week when we toured the quaint town of Opunake that, in our perception, we found to be “beautiful.”

Barcelona, Part 1…Security scare!!!..OMG!!!…

Before we describe our visit to the bustling historic city of Barcelona, Spain, let’s get the scary story out of the way. Thus, this is the end of the story described in the beginning.

On this back-to-back cruise, we were given priority sticky badges to wear when we return to the ship, to avoid the lines with new passengers boarding. On our last back-to-back on Carnival, this process was literally seamless, taking only minutes to board as we were graciously pushed through the lines.

As a precaution today, Tom wore two pairs of pants. The inside pair was cargo shorts with multiple pockets closing with Velcro. Over those shorts, he wore a pair of jogging pants with an elastic waistband.

The purpose of the abundant attire was to protect those items from pickpockets for which we have been well-warned by many travelers. It would have required the pickpockets taking Tom’s pants off to get to the stuff.

Ironically, as we departed the ship we noticed most passengers carrying backpacks, purses, wallets with straps and various other bags and containers, all fodder for pickpockets. Barcelona has a reputation for a high risk of being pick pocketed, in many cases rather aggressively. We were prepared. No such incident occurred.

Returning as back-to-back passengers, Norwegian Epic’s process was cumbersome and annoying. Returning from Barcelona after the hectic rush of traffic, zillions of tourists in a mad frenzy to see the myriad sites, we were anxious to get back on the ship.

At the entry point, we were steered into a lengthy line with hundreds of passengers of all ages, rolling their carry on luggage and talking while paying little attention to the movement of the line. 

Tom is not the most patient person on the planet, easily annoyed by lines.  Hopefully, as our travels continue, he’ll become more patient. He’s trying. In no time at all, he gets over it and the grumbling ceases. I tend to ignore his fussing. 

This afternoon, around 2:00 pm when we returned to the ship, his patience was wearing thin as 30 minutes or more crawled by as we waited in the long line. Finally, we reached the security checkpoint.

I was a little anxious as we approached security, since while in Barcelona, we stopped at a “Pharmacia” to purchase more contact lens solution. I’d already gone through the small $12.50 bottle we’d purchased on the Carnival Liberty. The Epic’s little shop doesn’t carry contact lens solution. Quite odd, actually.

Security checkpoints do not allow bringing any obvious liquids aboard the ships as prohibited when flying. Along a shelf, I noticed numerous partially used bottles of various liquids, soda, water, iced tea and lemonade. 

Oh, oh. Were they going to confiscate my contact lens solution? (When we originally boarded the Epic on April 20th, we learned this lesson when we had to forfeit our liter bottle filled with Crystal Lite Ice Tea).

As we approached the security area during the mad rush, we decided to share a white plastic bin with the items from our pockets: the camera, one RFID passport holder containing both of our passports, Tom’s plastic pocket comb, my metal tube of  lipstick, a holder for our cabin key cards, a small amount of Euros we’d purchased when we got off the ship and Tom’s jacket. That’s all we had on us.

Pushing the items through the scanner we each walked through the metal detector, one by one, without incident. As we reached the end of the table,  preparing to grab our stuff as our white plastic bin came through, suddenly a bevy of Spanish security guards surrounded us. 

A breath caught in my throat. Tom and I glanced at each other, panic in our eyes. What was wrong? The seated security guard pointed to an item on his scanner, shouting, “What is this?”

Tom and I both crooked our necks to see an item on the screen neither of us recognized. I suggested it was my camera, my heart beating in my throat. Tom was baffled. Obvious confusion was in his eyes. 

The guards surrounding us started taking the items out of the bin, one by one, to discover a closed 4″ BLACK HANDLED BUCK KNIFE!!!!

This was the type of knife in our bin, but with a 4-4.5 inch blade.

Shocked, I looked at Tom wondering if he had brought such a knife, dismissing it instantly, knowing he’d never be so foolish. At exactly the same moment we both protested, panic in our voices,”This is not ours.” It wasn’t ours. 

Someone had placed the knife in our white plastic bin! How were we going to get out of this pickle? Were we going to jail? Oh, good grief! Were they trying to get us to pay some exorbitant fine? Why? Why? Why, had this happened?

We both protested loudly, desperately trying to communicate with the Spanish speaking guards. We kept saying, over and again, “No, no, no.  This is not our knife! We have no knife with us! We are returning passengers to the ship. Take the knife! It is not ours!!!”

The guard talked in muffled tones among themselves. The seated guard looks up at us and says, “Go, go, go.  Not your knife!”

Baffled by the experience, hearts still pounding, we couldn’t walk away quickly enough. As we raced through the walkways toward the ship, we barely spoke, still reeling over the incident.

How did that knife get there? Tom suspects that it was a standard test put upon the security guards by the upper echelon to see if the guards would, in fact, “catch” the knife on their scanner as it came through. I’m not so sure. I suspect that another passenger realizing they had the knife on them, wanting to avoid being arrested, tossed it into our bin.

We’ll never know.  Lesson learned? One of us holds onto the bin as it goes into the scanner while the other waits on the other side for it to come through.  Anyone have any suggestions? Please, do tell.

My contact lens solution went through without incident.

Barcelona, we’re on our way!…

Last night’s “towel pet,” an adorable bunny.  WiFi too slow to add more photos today.
Staying awake until 3:30 am another night, partly from the excitement of sailing through the Strait of Gibraltar and the remainder of our seven hour time difference. We can’t seem to shake this time difference, no matter how hard we try.

Continuing to go further and further east on our trip to Dubai, the difference will only become more pronounced. Prior to this cruise, we’d assumed that adding time slowly, as we crossed the ocean would make the time changes less obvious. How wrong we were!

We now realize that a fast time changes one experiences when flying makes adjustment easier when one is in control of their waking, eating and sleeping. 

On a ship, time is scheduled, leaving us feeling as if we must try to stay in sync with the ship’s time in order to get into the restaurants and events on time. There are a few dining spots open 24 hours, but they serve fried foods, burgers and pizza, none of which meets my dietary criteria.

Last night, left us in awe in a similar manner as when we traveled through the Panama Canal.  When we entered the area, Tom commented that it would have been especially enjoyable to see the Strait (I’ve since learned it’s “strait” not “straits”, my error) during the day.

Much to our surprise, the nighttime crossing was breathtaking with a twinkling light show, varying in size and color as we passed by Morocco and then finally to the Strait of Gibraltar.

At the moment, as we sit in our favorite booth in the Garden Cafe, we can see the shores of Cartagena, Spain.  Tomorrow, morning we’ll arrive in Barcelona where we’ll spend the day exploring and taking photos.  Later in the day we’ll return to this ship, the Norwegian Epic, for the four remaining days of our back-to-back cruise.

With five and a half hours sleep, I’m feeling a little more rested today. Missing five days without working out after the three days of rough seas plus sheer exhaustion, today I’ll force myself to get to the health club. We’re losing our tans, but hopefully I can maintain my level of fitness, vital to our continuing travels.

By the way, I’ve yet to take the time to open the box with the new camera, charge it and learn to use it. Over the next few days, while out to sea, I plan to get it taken care of.  There will be some serious shooting as we begin the 15 day journey to the Middle East.  Perhaps, committing this to writing, will force me to follow through.

Look for us late afternoon tomorrow, with photos of Barcelona when we return to the ship for the remaining four days of this cruise.

Ship taking a detour today…Sick passenger being dropped off in Bermuda, plus rough seas…

Our ship, the Norwegian Epic is taking a detour today to drop off an ill passenger in Bermuda. 

This morning, the captain made this announcement as well as warning us we will be approaching rough waters today. He said, “Hang on, folks. You paid for this in your ticket.” Oh.

Plus, our Internet connection is really awful. We will write here with updates but will be unable to post any photos today for this reason.

The weather is very windy and cool. It doesn’t appear we’ll be enjoying any poolside lounging as we sail across the ocean. 

Last night, we had a one hour time change and will experience several more the closer we get to Europe.
